Valparaiso: a mythical port of colour, culture and landscape
Nicknamed “Paradise Valley”, Valparaiso is a legendary port city in Chile, less than two hours’ drive north-west of Santiago. Its captivating charm, which has inspired seafarers since the 19th century, lies in its storied port history, as it was an obligatory maritime stopover on the west coast of the Americas before the construction of the Panama Canal. The colourful houses that adorn its streets are living testimony to this history, where residents dressed their homes in bright colours to protect them from the sea air.
Valparaiso is divided into two distinct areas: a flat zone and a hilly zone made up of hills known as cerros. The cerros are Cerro Concepcion, Cerro Miraflores and Cerro Alegre. Wandering through these picturesque neighbourhoods, with their sloping streets, colourful houses, charming shops and lively cafés, offers an experience worthy of a living postcard.
The city is also renowned for its flourishing street art. Murals and graffiti can be seen on every street corner, turning Valparaiso into a veritable open-air museum. The Cerro Bellavista even houses an open-air museum where visitors can admire numerous works of urban art.
For panoramic views of Valparaiso, its colourful houses and picturesque bay, visitors can take the funiculars that link the cerros to the flat area of the city. The famous Reina Victoria funicular offers a picturesque and practical experience.
For a deeper understanding of Valparaiso, a visit to the Fine Arts Museum in Cerro Alegre is recommended. This museum exhibits art collections that trace the city’s history and showcase the talent of Chilean artists.
Valparaiso’s gastronomy is an experience in itself. Be sure to try the Pisco Sour, Chile’s national drink, as well as the delicious empanadas, small fritters filled with meat, cheese or vegetables. Valparaiso’s renowned ice creams will also delight gourmets.
Last but not least, a visit to La Sebastiana, the house-museum of Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the life and work of this emblematic artist. Nestling on Cerro Florida, it offers a breathtaking view of Valparaiso.
Just a few kilometres from Valparaiso is the charming seaside resort of Viña del Mar, with its white sandy beaches, picturesque streets, museums and lively cultural life, including the famous festival of the same name. A pleasant getaway to round off your discovery of the region.
Valparaiso is a fascinating destination that invites travellers to lose themselves in its unique atmosphere. With its colourful houses, vibrant street art, picturesque funicular railways and breathtaking panoramas, Valparaiso is a very special place in the Chilean landscape.
