Peru honoured at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2023

Peru, with its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, was recently honoured on the international stage for its efforts in sustainable tourism. Eight Peruvian destinations were honoured at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2023, at a special ceremony in Tallinn, Estonia, highlighting best practice in sustainability in the tourism sector.

The Green Destinations Story Awards have a dual objective: to highlight and promote the most inspiring sustainable tourism initiatives. They also recognise projects that actively promote environmentally friendly and responsible tourism practices.

These projects encompass a wide range of actions aimed at preserving biodiversity, minimising carbon footprints, enhancing culture and supporting local communities to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourist destinations.

Well-known destinations include :

• Islas Cavinzas e Islotes Palomino National Reserve: Located on the coast of Callao province, this reserve is a haven for seabirds such as seagulls, pelicans and Humboldt penguins. Its abundant marine ecosystems make it an ideal place for diving and wildlife observation.

• The Province of Puno: Nestling in the Andean heights of south-east Peru, Puno is famous for Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Its rich cultural heritage, traditional festivals and floating islands made of totora reeds, inhabited by the Uros indigenous community, make it a must-see destination.

• The historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu: Located in the Cusco region, this emblematic site is a jewel of Inca architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also recognised as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

• Los Órganos: This seaside paradise in Piura, on Peru’s north coast, is renowned for its dream beaches and waves that are perfect for surfing. Its rich marine fauna, including whales and turtles, attracts ecotourism enthusiasts.

• Tingo María National Park: Located in the Huánuco region, this park is renowned for its impressive geology and breathtaking scenery, offering opportunities for trekking and wildlife watching.

• Lachay National Reserve: in the Lima region, this reserve is astonishing for its desert landscapes, which blossom into a carpet of colourful flowers during the flowering season.

• Titicaca National Reserve: Encompassing part of Lake Titicaca, this reserve is a haven for waterfowl and wildlife. The floating islands of Uros and the island of Taquile are particularly popular, with their indigenous communities preserving ancestral traditions.

• Paracas National Reserve: Located in Ica, on Peru’s southern coast, this reserve is notable for its marine biodiversity and coastal birds. The rock formations, cliffs and Ballestas islands, home to sea lions and penguins, are particularly remarkable.

These destinations, true treasures of Peru, illustrate the country’s commitment to tourism that respects the environment and cultural traditions; they also underline the importance of collaboration between the various players in the sector to achieve common sustainability objectives.
