Bogota and Cartagena de Indias airports in Colombia: Ambitious expansion plans
Colombia is embarking on major expansion projects for Bogota and Cartagena de Indias airports, aimed at boosting their capacity and reinforcing their role in the country’s tourism and economy.
Rafael Núñez Airport in Cartagena de Indias: A Major Transformation
Rafael Núñez airport in Cartagena de Indias, one of Colombia’s main tourist gateways, is about to undergo a major transformation. With an investment of almost USD 230 million, the airport will be equipped with a new terminal of more than 17,000 m2, an extension of its commercial hub totalling almost 100,000 m2, improvements to runways and aircraft parking areas, as well as the modernisation of existing infrastructure and new access routes to the airport. This ambitious project, which is due for completion in 2027, is designed to meet the growing demand for travellers and facilitate the flow of tourists to this popular Caribbean destination. In addition, the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has confirmed plans for a new airport in the Bayunca area, some thirty kilometres from Cartagena de Indias, the details of which should be known by 2026.
Bogotá El Dorado Airport: Expansion to boost capacity
Bogota’s El Dorado airport, one of the busiest in Latin America and considered to be the best in South America, is also preparing for a significant expansion. This expansion project, which aims to increase the airport’s capacity by 8% to meet the growing demand for air traffic, should be completed before the end of 2025.
The expansion plan includes the construction of new runways, the extension of existing terminals, and improvements to services and infrastructure. These improvements will enable El Dorado airport to handle a greater number of flights and passengers, strengthening its position as a major air hub in Latin America.
These expansion projects at Cartagena and Bogota airports are crucial to Colombia’s economic and tourism development. By increasing their capacity and improving their infrastructure, these airports will play a key role in attracting international tourists and investors. These expansions are also essential to strengthen Colombia’s air connectivity with the rest of the world, facilitating business and leisure travel.
