Peru ranks as one of the world’s top destinations in 2023
Peru continues to position itself as one of the best tourist destinations in the world. The prestigious publication National Geographic has placed the country on its list of the best destinations to visit in 2023, informed the Peruvian Promotion Commission for Export and Tourism (PROMPERÚ).
The selection of the best destinations is divided into five categories: nature, adventure, culture, community and family. Each selection aims to honour an outstanding destination that offers a relevant story to tell the following year.
In this sense, the archaeological site of Choquequirao has been designated as one of the five best adventure destinations for international tourism in 2023. Choquequirao is an Inca city that is becoming increasingly popular with trekking enthusiasts thanks to its excellent state of conservation but also to the fact that it is much less visited than “its sister” city, Machu Picchu.
“For Peru, it is great news to know that we are part of the prestigious National Geographic Best World Destinations list, as it allows us to give greater impetus to the work carried out by PROMPERÚ, aimed at boosting tourism and strengthening the image of our country,” said Amora Carbajal, executive president of PROMPERÚ.
“This year’s list is very timely. Since the pandemic, people are once again embracing the opportunity to travel. National Geographic is looking to rethink what it means to be a traveller and how our travel choices impact our world and our communities,” said Carolien van Hoorn, Brand Director, National Geographic Group Netherlands.
International awards
National Geographic’s recognition follows on from the awards Peru has recently received. In the Latin American edition of the World Travel Awards 2022 (W.T.A.), Peru won three awards: best culinary destination, best cultural destination and best tourist attraction in South America.
For the 2023 edition of the World Travel Awards, which will take place this November, Peru has six nominations.
