Tulum inaugurates its new airport: a giant step for tourism and the economy

The project, completed in a record time of six months, marks a turning point in the region’s accessibility and economic development.
An ambitious project completed in record time

This technical and organisational feat has been hailed as an example of the Mexican government’s efficiency and determination to boost tourism and the local economy.

Airport features and capacity
The airport, designed to complement the existing tourism infrastructure, has a 3.7-kilometre runway capable of handling large aircraft, a modern terminal with capacity for 13 commercial aircraft, and a dedicated business aviation site. With this new gateway, Tulum is expecting a significant increase in visitor numbers, strengthening its position as a leading tourist destination.
To date, 6 airlines have confirmed their operations with this new airport: Aeromexico, American Airlines, Delta, Spirit, VivaAerobus and Volaris. International connections will initially be mainly to the United States and Canada, with flights to and from New York, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto in addition to connections from the main national airports.
Economic and tourism impact
The opening of Tulum International Airport is a potential driver for the local economy. It should not only facilitate access for tourists, but also stimulate investment in the region. Experts predict increased economic growth, particularly in the hotel, restaurant and service sectors.
Connection with the Tren Maya Project
The airport will also play a key role in connecting with the Tren Maya project, a major initiative to improve transport infrastructure in the Yucatán peninsula. This synergy between the airport and the train promises to transform the way tourists and local residents travel around the region.
With the inauguration of its airport, Tulum is gearing up for a promising future. This major step forward in its infrastructure is another step towards realising its potential as a global tourist destination, offering increased accessibility and new opportunities for travellers and investors alike.
