Volcan Arenal: Adventures and relaxation in the heart of Costa Rica

The Arenal Volcano, located in the northern region of Costa Rica, is one of the country’s most spectacular and fascinating destinations. This majestic volcano, which rises to 1,670 metres, is the centrepiece of Volcán Arenal National Park, a site renowned for its natural beauty and numerous outdoor activities. It’s a must for nature lovers, adventurers and those in search of relaxation.

Arenal Volcano National Park

The Arenal Volcano National Park, created in 1991, covers around 12,000 hectares. It offers a variety of landscapes, from dense tropical forests to open grasslands, rivers and lakes. The park is also a haven for a diverse range of wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, monkeys and over 850 species of birds.

Exploration and Activities

Hiking

Volcán Arenal National Park offers a multitude of hiking trails that allow visitors to discover breathtaking scenery and exceptional biodiversity. Among the most popular trails we recommend

  • Sendero Coladas: This trail takes you through solidified lava flows, offering breathtaking views of the volcano and Lake Arenal.
  • Sendero Las Heliconias: This trail passes through dense rainforest, ideal for observing local wildlife, including monkeys, coatis and a variety of tropical birds.
  • Sendero Los Tucanes: A more leisurely walk through rainforest, ideal for birdwatching.
  • Sendero El Ceibo: This 2.3-kilometre trail, although it has a few inclines, is easy to walk. Halfway along, you’ll come across a majestic ceiba, a tree estimated to be over 400 years old.
  • Mirador al Cono Volcánico: Located around 1.7 kilometres from the ticket office, this viewpoint is accessible by car and offers spectacular views of the volcanic cone.

Outdoor adventures

The region around the Arenal Volcano is a veritable playground for thrill-seekers. One of the most popular activities is zip-lining through the canopy of the rainforest, offering breathtaking aerial views and a good dose of adrenalin. Rafting, meanwhile, is ideal for those looking to descend the tumultuous rapids of the Balsa or Sarapiqui rivers, promising a thrilling experience. For a more leisurely but equally immersive adventure, horse riding offers the chance to explore the trails on horseback, allowing you to discover the lush landscapes at a soothing pace. Finally, suspension bridges add a unique dimension to exploring the rainforest. These bridges offer a fascinating insight into the local flora and fauna, combining adventure and serenity in a breathtaking natural setting.

Hot springs

Volcanic activity has given rise to a number of natural thermal springs in the region. The mineral-rich waters of these springs are renowned for their therapeutic properties and offer an unparalleled experience of relaxation surrounded by lush vegetation.

The Park’s surroundings

La Fortuna

The small town of La Fortuna, close to the park, is the ideal base from which to explore the region. It offers a range of accommodation, restaurants and activities, from horse riding to visits to coffee plantations. La Fortuna is also famous for its waterfall, which falls more than 70 metres into a natural pool surrounded by greenery.

Tenorio National Park and the Rio Celeste

A short distance from La Fortuna is the Tenorio National Park, famous for the Rio Celeste. This unique river owes its turquoise-blue colour to a natural chemical reaction. A hike through the forest leads visitors to a magnificent waterfall and volcanic mud baths.

Volcan Arenal and its national park are a unique destination combining natural beauty, adventure and relaxation. With its picturesque hiking trails, soothing hot springs and numerous outdoor activities, the park offers an unforgettable experience. By exploring the Arenal Volcano, visitors can truly appreciate the raw power of nature and Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or a wilderness adventure, Volcan Arenal promises lasting memories and total immersion in one of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.
